British designer Charmian Inman´s love of jewellery stems from, amongst other things, a childhood living abroad. From a young age, she became an avid bead collector when falling for the wonderful array of shapes and vivid blend of colours on offer in the streets and local markets of West Africa and the West Indies. Aware of how little space these beads needed when constantly on the move, they became ideal traveling treasures.
Since graduating in Jewellery Design from Central Saint Martins College of Art in 1984, she has designed, made and sold jewellery through outlets in the the Uk and abroad, with a more recent focus on personalized pieces for clients and smaller collections.
Over time, her personal work has evolved from producing collections of simple, sculptural designs in silver to later introducing a mix of materials, both precious and non-precious. These pieces are still considered to be “classic with a modern touch”. Inspiration comes from spending time in markets, museums and the countryside.
Her interest in the promotion of craft and design within local communities around the world has led to collaborations with NGOs such as the Crafts Council of India and Diseño para el Desarrollo, and she has, since 2006, worked, internationally, on design development programmes within the Fair Trade sector. These projects have, so far, taken her to India, Nepal, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Kenya.
Having worked as production manager at Helena Rohner during the 1990s, she continues to maintain strong links with Spain through her collaborations with Diseño para el Desarrollo and as director and tutor of the Jewellery Design Course at the IED, Madrid.
